A remarkable breakthrough in classical studies has emerged with the translation of the Euripides Papyrus, a 3rd-century text found in 2022 in a pit grave at the necropolis of Philadelphia in Egypt

The fragile manuscript preserves around 100 previously unknown lines written by the famed 5th-century B.C. Greek playwright Euripides, specifically from his lesser-known works Ino and Polyidos. These fresh verses offer rare insight into lost sections of Euripides’ tragedies, expanding our understanding of his themes, storytelling, and dramatic style.

The discovery demonstrates how even fragmentary archaeological finds can reshape literary history, restoring pieces of classical literature believed gone forever. This translation not only enriches Euripidean scholarship, but also reconnects modern readers with voices and stories that lay hidden for two millennia.
